Introduction
Age can tell us something about a person, but it does not tell us everything about how they move.
Two people of the same age can have completely different levels of strength, mobility, balance, coordination and confidence. One may be active and strong, while another may be recovering from an injury or dealing with stiffness and reduced mobility.
This is why exercise selection should never be based on age alone.
In Pilates, the focus should be on the person in front of you, not simply the number on their birth certificate.
Looking Beyond Age

Good movement starts with understanding the individual.
When choosing Pilates exercises, it is important to consider how someone moves, what they can comfortably do, where they have limitations and what they want to achieve.

Factors such as strength, mobility, balance, posture, previous injuries, pain, coordination and daily activities can all influence how an exercise should be taught.
For example, an older client may have excellent strength and movement control and be able to perform exercises that are challenging. A younger client may have limited mobility or poor movement control and need more support and modification.
Age alone does not tell us which exercise is appropriate.
The Body Changes, But Not in the Same Way for Everyone

As we get older, changes in strength, bone density, balance, mobility and recovery can occur. However, these changes are not identical for everyone.
This is where thoughtful exercise selection becomes important.
Rather than assuming what someone can or cannot do because of their age, Pilates can provide an opportunity to observe how they actually move and adjust the session accordingly.
An exercise may need to be modified, progressed, slowed down or replaced entirely. The goal is not to make every person perform the same movement. The goal is to find the right movement for that individual.
Look at the Person, Not the Number

A good Pilates session starts with observation.
- How does the client stand?
- How do they walk?
- Can they balance comfortably?
- How do they control their spine, hips and shoulders?
- Do they have enough mobility for the exercise?
- Do they understand the movement?
- Are they experiencing discomfort?
These questions provide much more useful information than age alone.
This individual approach also helps create sessions that are more purposeful. Instead of choosing exercises simply because they are considered suitable for a particular age group, the teacher can make decisions based on what the client actually needs.
Conclusion
Age can be one piece of information, but it should never define what someone is capable of.
Effective Pilates teaching looks at the whole person. It considers their movement, history, abilities, limitations and goals, then uses that information to guide exercise selection.
When we stop making assumptions based on age, we create more thoughtful and individualised movement experiences.
Everybody deserves to be seen as an individual.
